Chapter 02 · How to read the map
Four filters, one ranked picture of where the road turns dangerous.
The permanent left-hand rail is the working instrument of this index. Every BlackSpot pin you see on the canvas has been filtered, weighted and ranked against four axes — and every axis is yours to interrogate.

Severity
Toggle the postcode-level BlackSpot Score from 0 to 100. Pins above 80 carry the active "BlackSpot" warning; 60–79 indicates a junction under sustained driver concern; 40–59 is monitored but not flagged. The score blends STATS19 collision data with community confirmation weight.

Road class
Isolate motorway junctions, A-roads, B-roads or local streets. Fleet managers running weekly route audits typically begin with the strategic road network; commuter drivers narrow further to the specific A-road they travel daily.

Time of day
Reweight the index by hour band — school-run, evening commute, late-night weekend. A junction with a benign daytime score can climb sharply between 22:00 and 03:00; the rail surfaces that pattern instantly.

Switch the layer to police-validated collisions only. Every pin remaining has been cross-checked against official STATS19 records within 48 hours of submission — the conservative mode used by the team of six former collision investigators in Manchester.

Where the data comes from
Every figure on this map is the product of a 14-year archive built from two streams: the police-reported STATS19 collision dataset, refreshed against the Department for Transport's quarterly release, and 1.2 million community-submitted hazard reports filed by motorists since 2011. We cross-check each new submission against police logs within 48 hours of arrival — a discipline that has held our confirmation rate at 94% across the lifetime of the project.
The resulting index now covers 218,472 junctions across England, Wales and Scotland, of which 89,300 carry an active BlackSpot warning. It is the largest open dataset of its kind outside the Department for Transport itself, and the only one weighted equally by police data and driver observation. Researchers, local authority planners and national press may request a full methodology packet via the address in the colophon.
